Charlotte Water participated in the US Water Alliance’s national awareness campaign called Imagine a Day Without Water by producing a series of short videos that highlight the value of water in our region and the collaboration needed to plan for things like droughts, emergencies and even the extensive growth happening in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
Our region has unique shared water resources, especially the vast network of lakes that are used for drinking water, energy and recreation.

Water is just so important to our daily existence. Water is life and it is the foundation of our community. Hello I am Angela Charles. I am the director of Charlotte Water and I’m here to talk to you about the value of water. What we do on a day-to-day basis is treat and distribute water to over 1.2 million people in our region. And the reason why we protect this valuable resource is that it has to be here today and used today, but it also has to be around for the future. I really like to think of water as the economic lifeblood of our community and being able to serve a region of over a million people and keep consistent reliable water service going on a day-to-day basis is pretty phenomenal. Supports everything from hospitals to daycares to residents to all the economic development that we do in the region. This Catawba-Wateree Lake System is 11 lakes that start at Lake James in the mountains and ends up at Lake Wateree in South Carolina. This is the most densely populated river basin in the Carolinas. So there’s a tremendous need for water here. And while the rain is what we all have to count on because that’s where all this water comes from, the lakes provide storage. That increases the amount of time that we have available to us with enough water to meet all our needs. We ensure that water is usable for our community. So on behalf of 1,200 water professionals in this community, we thank you for your support of Charlotte Water and your support of this awesome mission that we have to protect our most precious resource in our community.
